Units of translation as units of translatability

With simultaneous translation services such as Transcriberry transcribing the most common unit of translation is a word group. But even in this case, a sentence can be a unit of translation.

The authors go on to draw such conclusions, gradually leading the reader to them:

Considering the test in its totality of substantive and formal features as a unit of translation is quite consistent with the functional-communicative approach to translation.

The choice of translation strategy is determined by the very peculiarities of the given act of interlingual communication, by the peculiarities of the translated text especially if the translation is in the format of speech to text as it is done here https://transcriberry.com/speech-to-text-transcription-service/ which once again confirms the statement that the unit of translation is ultimately the text.

I would like to make a few comments from the point of view of a practicing translator.

I remember the emergence of "text linguistics" as a newfangled trend at the turn of the '60s and '70s, flooding everything in an instant. I myself had just entered the faculty of translation at the Moscow Institute in 1969. But even then, as a student, the linguistics of the text involuntarily aroused my aversion, it seemed somewhat far-fetched. Why would I suddenly consider and analyze not a single sentence or phrase, but, say, the entire novel War and Peace?

Today, I will take the liberty of expressing the opinion that textual linguistics is closer to textology, literary criticism and stylistics. In this sense, the methods and principles of text linguistics are probably relevant for fiction and literary translations, but less so for translation in general as an applied type of professional linguistic activity.

The desire to find a single transcription service as https://transcriberry.com/interview-transcription-service/ for all occasions is not doomed to failure in advance. Both when translating different texts and when translating a single text, the units of translation may vary.

Some things can be translated even at the level of individual words or phrases, using a purely substitution method and existing stable or regular inter-lingual correspondences (lexical, terminological, idiomatic).

Somewhere it will be necessary to look for an equivalent in the target language for part of a sentence or the whole sentence. And, characteristically, it will not necessarily be lexical difficulties of translation. The vocabulary variant, even if it is available, often does not fit purely syntactically into the cannon of the sentence in the target language. RELATED RESOURCES: Watch YouTube and learn!
