ZAMBIA PRIMATE PROJECT
In May 2023, Game Rangers International proudly welcomed the Zambia Primate Project (ZPP) into its Wildlife Rescue work. This dedicated, compassionate conservation project follows a clear Rescue, Rehabilitate, Release strategy, ensuring that primates impacted by human activity are given a second chance at life in the wild.
ZPP’s mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release back to the wild monkeys and baboons that are victims of the illegal wildlife trade in Zambia.
Since its inception, ZPP has:
-
Successfully released over 810 primates back into the wild.
-
Achieved an exceptional 85–100% survival rate at 12 months post-release — making it one of the most successful primate release projects in the world.
Beyond rescue and rehabilitation, ZPP works to educate and sensitise local communities, reducing the number of primates being captured or kept in captivity. Through this approach, the project seeks to alleviate suffering, promote coexistence, and restore primates to the wild where they belong.
Tusk Award for Conservation
After witnessing a monkey being stoned by community members as a young boy, Cosmas Mumba dedicated his life to protecting and rescuing primates. Coming from a humble background, Cosmas didn’t finish school, nor has he received any formal training. But he is an exceptional primatologist and the most dedicated Project Manager who started ZPP in 2002.
