EMERGENCY APPEAL
ZAMBIA IS EXPERIENCING THE MOST SEVERE DROUGHT ON RECORD
President Hichilema has declared a national emergency. Water sources are insufficient for community existence, and a million hectares of crops have already been destroyed, severely affecting two-thirds of the population. Over six million people are facing acute food shortages, malnutrition and loss of income.
THE CONSEQUENCES FOR WILDLIFE AND WILD SPACES WILL BE DEVASTATING
As communities become increasingly desperate, we anticipate:
-
Escalating Human-Wildlife Conflict as people and wildlife compete for dwindling resources.
-
Decreased tolerance for crop-raiding, resulting in the retaliation killing of elephants, and subsequent orphaning of elephant calves.
-
Starvation and increased disease prevalence in wildlife due to inadequate natural food sources.
-
A rise in poaching, wildfires, habitat destruction and illegal offtake to support livelihoods.
GRI'S URGENT DROUGHT RESPONSE
Distributions Service Provider
With excellent community relations, research and communication capabilities and strong networks in the most remote parts of the country, GRI is well-placed to disseminate humanitarian resources to those most in need, mapping outputs and meticulously reporting on distributions.
Human-Wildlife Conflict Mitigation
We need to increase all elements of Human-Wildlife Conflict support to local communities, including deterrent distribution, rapid response and alternative livelihood empowerment. Anti-poaching efforts must be strengthened and enhanced to ensure wildlife is secured under increasing tensions and pressure.
Preparing for the future
We must prepare for increasingly unpredictable weather patterns by empowering local communities with sustainable livelihoods and building capacity in climate adaptation, with an increased focus on water conservation, renewable energies and sustainable land practices.
